Beginner Open Water Class: Mon/Weds starts July 21

Dates: Mondays and Wednesdays beginning 7/21/08
Cost: $225 includes course fee, textbook, student kit, & rental equipment
(except mask, fins, & snorkel)

This class consists of 5 class sessions, held twice weekly. Each session runs from 6:00pm - 10:00pm. We schedule the classes over 3 weeks to account for students that need more time in training, possible pool closure, inclement weather, etc.

Prerequisites: None

Equipment Needed:
Prior to class start, you will need to purchase a mask, snorkel and fins. You can be fitted for your equipment in our shop, and our staff will be happy to assist you.

On your first day of class, you will also be fitted for a wet suit, BCD, regulator, weight belt and all additional equipment that you be able to use free of charge during the classes. You will not need to purchase this equipment.

Required Materials:
You will be given a textbook, DVD, dive log book, underwater dive planning chart(s) and other materials.

Class Structure:
Most classes will begin with a lesson and quiz based on the reading from the text. After the quiz, you�ll head to the University of Kentucky indoor pool to practice the techniques you learned. With all dives you will be supervised by your PADI instructor, and several divemasters.

First Day of Class:
Please be sure to bring a notebook, pen/pencil, bathing suit and towel to all classes.

CPR & First Aid, AED EFR: Tuesday, July 22

The Emergency First Response course teaches CPR (primary care) and First Aid (secondary care) as well as how to use an AED and oxygen for diving related emergencies. The skills you will learn are applicable in daily life as well as in scuba situations. This course is a prerequisite to the Rescue Diver class. And if it has been more than two years since you went through CPR training, you should take it again as standards are always being revised.If you want to take this course, you must come to New Horizons to sign up and to get your workbook and a DVD. Participants MUST view the DVD BEFORE and complete the written Knowledge Reviews before the night of training.

Equipment Specialist: Thursday, July 24

EquipmentWant to know how your scuba gear works in detail? How about the best tips for caring for and maintaining your life support equipment? These are just a couple of the goals of the Equipment Specialist course. This is one of the few specialty classes that doesn’t involve time spent in the water; it is conducted in its entirety in the classroom. Enriched Air / Nitrox: Tuesday, July 29

Breathing enriched air (nitrox) instead of air has several benefits, including longer allowable dive times, shorter surface intervals, and less decompression stress on your body. The course covers how enriched air is used, how to analyze the breathing gas, how to plan dives with it, and special equipment considerations.

Bonaire: July 12 - 19, 2008

Boat at Sea

Bonaire is a secluded island in the southern Caribbean; it is part of the Netherlands Antilles. It boasts some of the absolute best shore diving in the world. If you are interested in UNLIMITED diving, this is the adventure for you! Guests on this trip can do any number of dives each day; you will have unlimited boat dives and shore dives as well as unlimted access to air and enriched air (nitrox) tanks… 24 hours a day! We stay at a top-notch resort known as Buddy Dive (click for their website).

Cost: $1995 to $2195 per person depending on the type of room you select. Breakfast is included each day, other meals can be purchased at the resort, or you can dine at any number of great restaurants in town.

Turks & Caicos: October 11 - 18, 2008

Off the beaten path, and still a somewhat hidden paradise, the Turks & Caicos Islands (British West Indies) are close to the US but allow you to feel a relaxing world away. We are going to the Osprey Beach Resort, which is a beautiful hotel right on the water. The reefs are heavily populated with life and are only a short ten minute boat ride from the beach! The trip includes round trip airfare from Lexington, two boat dives per day for six days, taxes and transfers. Rooms are double occupancy atrium view units; you can upgrade to beach view rooms for an additional cost. The full trip fee is $2195; come in to the shop to place a deposit to hold your spot.

Peak Performance Buoyancy: August 14 & 16

Want to fine-tune and develop precision buoyancy control skills, learn new propulsion techniques, and vastly improve your comfort in the water? Then the Peak Performance Buoyancy course is for you. Whether you are a beginner or a diver of many years, this class will surely give you many new tips and tricks that will increase your diving skill. You will learn good body posture, proper weighting strategies, and develop the ability to make small moves in depth and position with minimal effort. These skills are a “must” for photographers and those who love to look closely at the reef without touching or causing harm. The dives in this course will even be filmed and reviewed so you can see exactly what you do well and what you need to work on.

SPECIAL BONUS FOR THIS CLASS ONLY: The open water dives for this class will take place on the same day and at the same location as the big annual Treasure Hunt & Pig Roast! So not only will you be learning and practicing better buoyancy, you will also get to participate in the hunt for prizes and the great food! You must still sign up for the Treasure Hunt and Pig Roast separately; call New Horizons at 277-1234 and/or click here for details.

Additional costs: tank fills, admission to Falling Rock Park, transportation
If you need a scuba kit, rental for the open water dives is included; all you need is your own mask, fins & snorkel.

No textbook or advance preparation is required, and there is no written test. If you show improvement through the open water dives and can demonstrate controlled hovering, refined propulsion techniques, controlled ascents and descents, and good team awareness, you will be awarded the PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy certification at the end of the course; this counts toward your Master Scuba Diver rating.
