Join us for a different kind of scuba adventure as we hunt for giant fossilized shark teeth in Venice, Florida! This short trip will be a getaway that won’t break the bank.
In shallow water, no more than 30 feet deep, fossil treasures are everywhere in Venice. A prehistoric fossil bed contains the remains of all kinds of shark teeth, including the extinct Megalodon, which grew to 50 feet long, more than three times the size of the modern Great White shark. The teeth from these sharks are several inches long! You can also find fossil bones from ancient mammals such as the mastodon, manatees, horses, whales, and others. Searching for these goodies can be quite addicting!
You can do four to six boat dives on this trip. It’s not scenic diving; we will be on a flat sandy bottom in 25 to 30 feet of water. Visibility will be limited, usually just about five feet. The water at the dive site will be around 70 degrees, so a warmer wetsuit (5mm to 7mm with hood and gloves) will be necessary on these longer, shallow dives. The dive operator rents thicker suits for $10/day, or we can help you with a special deal on a suit purchase if you sign up for the trip.
Here are the details of the trip:
Saturday, April 24: travel to Venice, Florida
Sunday, April 25: two tank afternoon boat dives
Monday, April 26: two tank morning boat dives, optional two more boat dives in afternoon
Tuesday, April 27: travel home to Kentucky
Cost: $TBA includes diving and lodging based on double occupancy rooms.
Getting there: Divers are responsible for their own transportation. If driving, the trip is about 2000 miles round trip, which would be about $70 in gas per person with three people per car. Once we know who and how many people are going, we can arrange carpools. It’s a long drive (about 15 hours each way), but with carpools and sharing the drive it is manageable. If you wish to fly, you can look into Tampa and Sarasota as arrival airports.
Meals, optional shore diving, and other incidentals not included. Space is limited to ten divers on this trip, so come in to sign up soon!
