Belize Trip Report: October 2007

NH Belize 2007

15 New Horizons travelers had a super week on Ambergris Caye, Belize. The barrier reef was only a five to ten minute boat ride from the hotel dock, which made for easy logistics. Life on the reef was active and plentiful. We saw countless nurse sharks actively swimming on patrol, lots of big grouper, several turtles, eagle rays, moray eels, and a wide variety of tropical fish. Sea conditions got rough a few days, but we enjoyed the dives once we jumped in the water!

Click on the video below to watch a one minute clip of nurse sharks having a fish snack courtesy of our dive guide. You will notice that the camera got a few “bumps” as the sharks eagerly chowed down.

Below, an Eagle Ray “flies” over by our dive group at 70 feet.

Gail cruises down a coral canyon enjoying the colorful sponges.
Nice form, by the way!

Green moray eels like this one were frequently seen on the reefs.

On our last day, we went into the heart of mainland Belize to see the Mayan ruins known as Lamanai (meaning “submerged crocodile”). It was fantastic!

Thanks to everyone who went on the trip; we hope you will join us again for another New Horizons Diving adventure!

This trip to Belize was my second trip to this beautiful country. The first thing you realize when you get there is that the people of Belize are warm, friendly, helpful, and not always out for the American Dollar. The next thing you realize is that the just about everyone smiles!

On a personal note: Gail and Sally became really good divers during this trip. You think you love diving? …compared to these two ladies, you can’t hold a candle.

A special thanks to Ed Gabe, the group leader, for making this trip the best I have been on with New Horizons. Problems that always come up were handled with ease. Thanks again, Ed!!!

This trip was absolutely amazing! This was my first time diving in the ocean. I’ve found my passion! The people of Belize, especially the children, are so warm and friendly. I want to thank Neil, Johnny and Ed for watching my back! Going on a trip with the Dive Shop was the best move I’ve made since learning to dive. You guys are awesome.

A special thanks to Mike Sullivan. I can’t believe I left your name off my original comment. Mike’s help and assistance throughout my 1st adventure in the ocean ensured that the experience was safe ~ this was a real learning experience.
