Beginners: Becoming a certified “Open Water Diver” is a two-stage process. First, you take the confined water course listed above, which consists of classroom and swimming pool training in which you learn the principles and techniques to become a safe recreational diver. This course costs $275 if done in our normal group setting (four to twelve people), or you can arrange private lessons for a higher fee depending on your time frame and number of people. If you successfully pass the confined water course, you then schedule open water “certification / check out dives” over two days in which you demonstrate your abilities to an instructor in a real-world diving environment (ocean, lake, quarry, etc.). Certification dives cost $200 in a group setting and can be done in a wide variety of locations. Private certification dives can be scheduled at your convenience for a higher fee. During the summer weekends, we go to a scuba diving park in Hopkinsville, KY called Pennyroyal Scuba Blue Springs Resort or in LaGrange, KY called Falling Rock Park. You can also do your certification dives on one of our many trips. Or if you are traveling on your own to a diving destination, we can provide you with a referral form so you can do the certification dives with another diving operation (their fees will vary). If you can successfully complete the certification dives, you will be issued a certification card with your photo on it that will be your permanent diving license. From there, you can gain experience by diving in a variety of locations, then move into additional courses and programs that interest you.
What does it take to dive? The minimum age for scuba training is 12 for group classes, and ages 10 and 11 can take private lessons (maximum of 4 students). There is no maximum age limit as long as you are in good physical condition. You must also be comfortable in the water. A swim test is conducted for all beginners; you must be able to swim 200 yards and float/tread water for 10 minutes. There is no time limit for the 200 yard swim, and you can use any combination of strokes that you wish. All students must also complete a questionnaire that asks about medical conditions that could be a problem while diving. If none of these apply, you sign the form and you are ready to start. If any of these apply to you, as a safety precaution your physician must assess the condition as it relates to diving and sign a medical form that confirms that you are fit to dive. You can read and download the medical form by clicking here.
